GDPR: One continent, one law (one severe penalty)
“The digital future of Europe can only be built on trust.” – Andrus Ansip, VP, European Union
The EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) becomes law on 25 May 2018. It is perhaps one of the most important set of regulations involving individuals’ information this decade – to consumers and to the companies based in Europe (and working in Europe) that serve them.
There are many benefits: establishing one single set of rules will make it simpler and cheaper for all companies to do business in the EU. But it comes at a cost. Breached organisations can expect fines of up to 4% of annual global turnover (NB turnover, not profit) or €20 million – whichever is greater.
Without proper technology in place to comply with these regulations, organisations will experience risk that manifests itself in the form of lost customer confidence and sales, security breaches, fines, sanctions, and potential lawsuits. Even with technology in place, complying with GDPR can be a challenge, as the volumes of customer information combined with varying requirements and data complexity can lead to errors and overspending.
So… What does the General Data Protection Regulation really mean for your business in Europe? And how can you plan now to ensure compliance in 22 months?
