The new directive opens the door for third-parties looking to build financial services on top of banks’ existing data and infrastructure through open APIs – meaning banks will no longer be solely competing against other banks, but anyone offering financial services. It will fundamentally change the payments value chain, business models and customer expectations, while the speed of digital services poses new challenges in terms of fraud and KYC.
